The Accumulation of Wealth: A Blend of Design and Tradition

An Innovative Package Design by Hui Shan Chen and Shu Wei Chen

The design draws its inspiration from the Lunar New Year practices in Taiwan where people pray for riches and agricultural products in the God of Wealth temple. The temple provides 'Lucky Money' which people place in their homes or companies for good luck. The designers sought to create a package that not only includes agricultural products but also allows people to accumulate wealth on their own.

What sets this design apart is its unique properties. The package comes in five different colors, each representing the Five-way God of Wealth and corresponding to different zodiac signs as per the Five-Phase Theory of Chinese numerology. This allows individuals to choose a package that aligns with their zodiac sign. The package is made using kraft paper and corrugated paper, assembled without glue, and features foil stamping technology to depict the Five-way God of Wealth.

The package offers an interactive experience, with each layer serving a different purpose. The first layer, a yellow prayer, is used to communicate with the Gods and is burnt after the communication. The second layer contains tea bags for a relaxing Taiwanese tea experience. The third layer holds cereal, symbolizing a year-round harvest when poured into a rice cylinder. The last layer is the package itself, which doubles as a coin bank, encouraging daily savings.

The design project, which began in October 2015 and concluded in May 2016 in Kaohsiung, sought to promote Taiwan's rich religious culture. The designers faced the challenge of creating a package structure without using glue and accurately depicting the Five-way God of Wealth. This required careful observation of the wood carving statues in the God of Wealth temple and numerous iterations to capture their image accurately.

The Accumulation of Wealth design has been recognized for its innovation and creativity, winning the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2017. This award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, and evoke positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
